Timun emas

Once upon a time on the island of Java, Indonesia, there lived a couple of farmers. They have been married for several years but have no children. So they prayed to a monster named Buta Ijo to give them a child. Buta Ijo is a fierce and strong monster. He granted their wish on one condition. When their children were grown, they had to sacrifice them for Buta Ijo. He likes to eat fresh human flesh. The farmers agreed with the conditions. Several months later his wife became pregnant.

She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. They named Timun Emas. The farmers are happy. Timun Emas is very healthy and a very smart girl. He is also very diligent. When the Buta Ijo teenager came to their house. Timun Emas was scared so she ran away to hide. The farmers then told Buta Ijo that Timun Emas was still a child. They asked him to delay. Buta Ijo agreed. He promised to come again. The following year Buta Ijo came again. But many times their parents said that Timun Emas was still a child.

When Buta Ijo came for the third time, their parents had prepared something for him. They gave Timun Emas some bamboo sticks, cucumber seeds, sauce and salt.
'Cucumber, take this'
"What is this thing?"
'This is your weapon. Buta Ijo will come after you. He will eat you alive. So run as fast as you can. And if he catches you, spread this to the ground. Go now!'

Timun Emas was scared so she ran as fast as she could. When Buta Ijo arrived, he was far from home. He was furious when he realized that his prey was gone. So he ran after her. He has a sharp nose so he knows which way his prey is running.

Timun Emas is just a girl while Buta Ijo is a monster so she can easily chase him. When only a few steps behind Timun Emas, the cucumber seeds quickly scattered. Within seconds they turned into many cucumber vines. The exhausted Buta Ijo was very thirsty so he took it and ate it. When Buta Ijo is engrossed in eating cucumber Timun Emas can run away.

But soon Buta Ijo regained consciousness and started running again. When he was only a few steps behind Timun Emas threw the bamboo needle. Soon they turned into dense bamboo trees. Buta Ijo has a hard time making a pass. It took some time for him to break the dense bamboo forest. While Timun Emas could run further.

Buta Ijo pursued him again. When he almost caught it again and again Timun Emas threw the sauce. This time it turned into a lake. Buta Ijo was busy saving himself so Timun Emas ran away. But Buta Ijo got over it and kept on chasing him.

Finally when Timun Emas was almost caught she threw away the salt. Soon the land where Buta Ijo stood turned into a sea. Buta Ijo drowned and died instantly. Timun Emas thanked God and returned to her house.
